UPDATE July 10, 2006

Thank you to all who have written in support. Seema would be happy to know there is such love being expressed amongst her friends and family.

We have confirmed a venue for Seema's Memorial Celebration. The event will take place August 19 at 1:00 p.m., at the First Congregational Church, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz. If you wish to help in any way, please write to me, Jason Weston, at memorial@seemaweatherwax.com.

In gratitude,

Original message:
My dear friend Seema died Sunday, June 25th, at 7:00 a.m. It was two months before she would have celebrated her 101st birthday.

Seema has been an important part of my life for many years. I still find it hard to imagine that I will not be having tea with her next week.

I know nothing would please Seema more than to have her entire extended community come together in celebration with one another. We (Seema's family and a few close friends) are planning a celebration of her life and her community, which we are currently planning for Saturday, August 19. We are seeking a venue that can accommodate upwards of 300 people. If you know of such a venue, please contact me (see below).

One of the remarkable things about Seema is her enormous network of close friends. If everyone close to Seema were to speak at her memorial celebration, we would likely have more than 50 speakers.

We really want to have everyone who wants to share about Seema to have an opportunity to do so. We have decided to put together a booklet honoring and celebrating her life, to which everyone who wishes can contribute. If you have a story, a poem, an anecdote, a picture, or anything else that can be printed, we would like to include it. This booklet will be given to everyone who comes to the memorial celebration, and this way everyone will have it to take home.

Bruce Hobson and Rachel Harris have generously offered to compile and create this booklet. Please send your remembrances to them at zancudos@gmail.com.

If you would like to donate money in Seema's name, please donate to either the NAACP of Santa Cruz, or to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. If you would like to donate to offset the cost of this celebration, please contact me (see below).

Creating this celebration will require many hands. I have agreed to coordinate the effort, but I would appreciate your help. Please let me know if you can assist in any capacity (finding a venue, notifying people, printing programs, food, etc.).

I will update this message as soon as we confirm a venue, and the date and time. Please check back often. If you would prefer that I send you an email to notify you of this, please send an email the address below.

Thank you for being part of Seema's community. We will all miss her.

Jason Weston
